Time for another Reads N Review!

I finished and reviewed two books earlier this week and I just finished:

Next Year in Havana by [Chanel Cleeton]

Rating: 4/5 stars

Book Blurb:

Havana, 1958. The daughter of a sugar baron, nineteen-year-old Elisa Perez is part of Cuba’s high society, where she is largely sheltered from the country’s growing political unrest—until she embarks on a clandestine affair with a passionate revolutionary…

Miami, 2017. Freelance writer Marisol Ferrera grew up hearing romantic stories of Cuba from her late grandmother Elisa, who was forced to flee with her family during the revolution. Elisa’s last wish was for Marisol to scatter her ashes in the country of her birth.

Arriving in Havana, Marisol comes face-to-face with the contrast of Cuba’s tropical, timeless beauty and its perilous political climate. When more family history comes to light and Marisol finds herself attracted to a man with secrets of his own, she’ll need the lessons of her grandmother’s past to help her understand the true meaning of courage.

What I Liked:

This was a solid read. I enjoyed both timelines, they were both engaging. I also liked how much history was actually included. I learned quite a few things about pre- Fidel Cuba. The romance was nice – not overly done and didn’t overshadow the story. And that twist- I gasped out loud! Well done.

What I Didn’t Like:

I felt at the end it got a little wordy. Other than that- no complaints. There are more books in this collection, I will definitely check them out in the future.

I have already started:

The Secrets We Kept: A novel by [Lara Prescott]

This is about secretaries/spies smuggling Dr. Zhivago out of Russia to publish it and circulate it. Apparently it’s based on a true story. I have never heard of this CIA plot so I am intrigued. I FLEW through the first 50 pages – so far, so good.

We are expecting snow and it is COLD so I trust I will have plenty of time to read in the upcoming week…

Happy reading!
